OUR HONEY
Find your kind of gold.
Two ways to enjoy a taste of Tomball when honey is available.
From our hives, each harvest travels to the extractor, passes through a simple sieve, and goes straight into the bottle. We never heat our honey, letting the natural character of the flowers and season shine through.

Naturally good honey.
A few things to know about the honey in your jar and the care we put into every bottle.
Pure and naturally raw
Our honey is never heated or treated, so it may thicken or crystallize over time. This is a natural change, not a defect.
Easy to return to liquid
Place the closed jar in a bowl of hot, not boiling water to return it to its liquid state. Keep the water hot rather than boiling, and do not use the microwave.
Our guarantee
Your satisfaction matters to us. If you’re not completely happy with your honey, please let us know and we’ll gladly replace it.

BEYOND THE HIVE
A backyard for more than bees.
We plant wildflowers and other pollen/nectar sources to help make room for pollinators throughout the seasons. Our honeybees share our backyard with butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators, each finding something among the flowers.
These visits to our sunflowers and Blue Mistflower are a little glimpse of the life around our hives.

How do bees make honey?
Worker bees visit flowers and draw up sugary nectar into a special storage pouch called the honey stomach. Back at the hive, they pass it to house bees, which handle it in tiny droplets. Enzymes the bees add break much of the nectar’s sucrose into glucose and fructose. The bees spread the liquid into wax comb cells and fan their wings to evaporate water. When the honey is concentrated enough, usually around 18% water, they seal the cell with a wax cap. This stored honey feeds the colony when flowers are scarce. Pollen is gathered separately as a source of protein for the bees and their young; it is not the raw material they turn into honey.
How many flowers will a bee visit to make one tsp of honey?
About 30,000 flower visits is a useful estimate for one teaspoon of honey. The National Honey Board estimates that honey bees visit about 2 million flowers to make one pound of honey. A pound holds roughly 65 teaspoons, so that works out to about 31,000 flower visits per teaspoon.
That is the combined work of many worker bees, not one bee making a whole teaspoon alone. The number is only a ballpark: flowers differ in how much nectar they offer, nectar’s sugar content changes, and the bees use some of what they collect for energy. Back at the hive, workers add enzymes and evaporate water from the nectar to make honey.
What is a worker bee’s life cycle?
A worker bee begins as a fertilized egg laid by the queen in a wax cell. The egg hatches after about 3 days. Nurse bees feed the larva for roughly 6 days, then cap its cell. Inside, it changes through the prepupal and pupal stages and emerges as an adult around day 21 from when the egg was laid.
As an adult, she first cleans cells and nurses young bees. Later she may build comb, process nectar, ventilate or guard the hive. Older workers forage for nectar, pollen, water, and plant resins. Summer workers often live about 6 weeks as adults; workers raised for winter may live up to about 6 months. Jobs and lifespan vary with the colony’s needs and season.
